Now in its 11th year, The Way Out Gala raises critically needed funds for The Salvation Army of Alameda County’s family services and homeless initiatives, supporting children and families with programs that provide safety, stability, and opportunity. Because every child deserves a childhood, these services help individuals break free from addiction, abuse, and poverty — restoring hope and creating real pathways forward.

This year, we are proud to honor Gary Payton Sr. — Oakland native, Hall of Fame athlete, and lifelong community advocate. Known to the world as “The Glove,” Payton’s legacy of leadership, resilience, and service mirrors the heart of our mission — showing what’s possible when talent meets tenacity and success is shared forward.

Hosted at the newly renovated Henry J. Kaiser Center for the Arts, an iconic Oakland landmark where legends once played, this year’s gala, with live entertainment, an elegant dinner, and a dynamic chat between Gary Payton and Tim Roye (the Voice of the Warriors), brings us together on historic hardwood for a higher purpose.

More than a game. A way out.

The goal of The Way Out Gala is to secure vital financial support that strengthens The Salvation Army of Alameda County's capacity to deliver life-changing services. Funds raised will directly enhance programs for both children and adults that offer education, shelter, food security, and vocational training, while keeping families united and empowering individuals to achieve independence and stability. By supporting the gala, donors will play a pivotal role in uplifting local communities and ensuring that every individual has the opportunity to build a brighter, more secure future.

NBA Hall of Famer Gary Payton, Oakland native and philanthropist, honored at The Way Out Gala 2026.

A legend on the court.

A leader in the community.

Born and raised in Oakland, Gary Payton Sr. grew up on cracked asphalt courts and in neighborhoods that demanded toughness, resilience, and heart. Those early years shaped the grit and edge that would carry him all the way to the NBA. The world would come to know him as “The Glove,” but long before the accolades and Hall of Fame honors, Gary was a kid from Oakland who never forgot where he came from — or who helped him get there.

In 1996, he started what is now called the Gary Payton Glove Foundation, not because he wanted to build something with his name on it, but because he wanted kids like the one he used to be to have more options than he did. Gary has always said that not every child is going to become an athlete — and that’s exactly the point. Through scholarships and educational support, his foundation helps young people pay for tuition, books, and the everyday costs that make college possible, whether their path runs through sports or somewhere entirely different. For Gary, education isn’t a backup plan. It’s the plan.

That belief — that access can change everything — sits at the center of his life’s work. It’s also why his story feels so deeply aligned with the mission of The Salvation Army. In the lives he’s touched and the futures he’s helped steady, Gary Payton Sr. has shown that lifting people up isn’t about grand gestures. It’s about showing up, again and again, and making sure someone else gets a real shot at what comes next.

Rising again at the edge of Lake Merritt, the Henry J. Kaiser Center for the Arts is one of Oakland’s most storied landmarks. Following a grand reopening in January 2025, the $100+ million renovation has reimagined this historic arena and brought it decisively back into the spotlight—and back in the game. Once the home court for Bay Area basketball and legendary live performances, this iconic Art Moderne arena has been beautifully restored, blending its dramatic curves and historic swagger with modern amenities and state-of-the-art production.
